More than 10 years after publishing the The State of Black Rochester 2013, the Community Foundation has collaborated with partners on a multimedia relaunch to dig deep for the answer to the question: What is the state of Black Rochester today?
The 2013 paperback of almost 140 pages was modeled after the National Urban League’s “State of Black America.” The compilation of essays from community leaders examined disparities and challenges for Black communities in the Rochester region.
Through video interviews and written articles, the State of Black Rochester 2024 explores how data and narratives have changed. Contributions come from a range of Black Rochesterians, many of whom are executives in their organizations and pioneers of community change.
The purpose of the State of Black Rochester is to foster greater understanding, connection, and positive change within the community.
Trailblazing Visionaries
The State of Black Rochester 2013 would not have been possible without the late Jim and Carolyne Blount, who were instrumental in editing, page design, and publishing of the book. For more than 50 years, this couple wielded the pen and podium to champion Black voices, stories, and causes in Rochester and beyond. As the driving forces behind About...Time Magazine and other publications, the Blounts etched their legacy as truth tellers and change makers, and helped illuminate the path toward equity for generations to come.
